As we keep using our Windows 10/8/7 PC, we tend to accumulate tons of files, images, and music. Chances are you that tons of files result in duplication, especially when it comes to images and music. These files take a lot of space on the PC, and they are not easy to figure out the duplicate files and delete them manually.

Duplicate files are a problem, as you do not know which one contains the most current content. In case of collaborating, you may miss out on changes your co-worker did to the document if you open the wrong one. The worst case scenario may be that you and your colleagues do not know about duplicates and you all work on different versions of the file.

Though there are junk cleaners such as the Comodo System Cleaner and CCleaner, they fail to recognize and fix the problem of duplicate files. Hence you need dedicated software that can search and remove and merge duplicate file.

Duplicate File Finder & Remover software

This article talks about three such free software which will help you find and delete or remove duplicate files in Windows 10/8/7. Below is the list of software that can help you remove duplicate files on the Windows 10 PC. Some are completely free, while some have a PRO version which helps you do more, and find files more accurately.

DoubleKiller

As evident by the name, DoubleKiller finds and removes duplicate files from your computer. The software from Big Bang Enterprises is available in two editions. One is free to use, and you have to pay for the other edition. Of course, the paid edition does more work, but you can get good results with the help of freeware too.

The software uses methods including hash comparison to compare files. This software is easy to use, and hence I placed it at the first position.

AllDup

It’s a powerful software, feature rich, which can find, and delete duplicate files. You can of course copy, and move as well. One of the riches aspects of this tool is finding duplicate MP3 files with different ID3 Tags. It has many options and filters compares MP3 files and images by their content, rather different metadata such as ID3 Tag.

Apart from this, another unique feature of this software is that it lets you compare two folders for duplicate files. You can choose to compare with one source folder or files within the folder or between different source folder. Later is very useful if you have a habit of maintaining copies at multiple places. Known popularly as the dupeGuru Music Edition, the latest version of dupeGuru adds music files comparison to the feature set.

In addition to removing duplicate files with similar filenames, this freeware also has the capability to search within files – especially MP3s – to know if they are similar even in case the filenames are different. Auslogics Duplicate File Finder

This freeware from the stables of Auslogics will help you to find and remove useless duplicate files, stored on your Windows PC. It’s another brilliantly designed software which can find duplicate images, audio files, video, archives, and applications on your Windows 10 PC. There are features which I absolutely loved about it. First it makes sure to backup everything you plan to delete, and second, it ignores a set of system files and folder by default.

That said, once you search, the results are displayed in form of groups with highlighted color. This makes it easy to understand. The results can be filters by date and type, and you can then choose to select only duplicate files by modified date, select only one the group, and so on.

Features:

  • Finds identical pictures, documents, and any other files
  • Compares files not only by names but by their content

If you want to find files based on size, type name, etc., it is possible. It can also search hidden files, but make sure to do it for folders which you own, and not use the system folders.

Dupscout Duplicate Finder

DupScout is an advanced duplicate file finder which can do a lot of things after it finds the duplicate file. Not everyone wants to delete the duplicate file, and if you want to move it a directory or compress it, you can do that. It can even scan Servers or NAS devices by simply entering their IP addresses. When searching for a file, you can create rules for the scanning process. In the end, it will generate a special report which gives you an idea of the storage space occupied, according to the type of file.

NoClone

NoClone is another free software which uses a real-time byte-to-byte comparison to detect duplicate files regardless of their file names. You can limit the search to specific file types (images, programs, etc.) as well as by size, date, and location.

This software uses the real-time byte-to-byte comparison to find the exact content and not related ones. The best part is that it supports a plethora of file extensions including s docx, xlsx, pptx; audio files, video files, Outlook emails and more. To find similar images, it uses a fuzzy search algorithm. The free version restricts itself to 300,000 files in a single session. The free edition of NoClone restricts itself to 300,000 files in a single session.

Other similar freeware in this category are:

  • Duplicate File Remover app from Microsoft Store.

Unless you have a perfect memory or keep a well-organized list of all your songs, you'll end up with at least one duplicate file in your library. This is one of the problems with maintaining a music collection, especially a large one where clones invariably worm their way in!

Trying to find duplicate files by listening to your entire music library is impractical; you're likely to give up even before you've got halfway. A more logical approach is to use a software tool to automatically do the hard work for you.

Duplicate file finders are great to use in this situation for cleaning up your music collection and reclaiming lost hard disk space.

If all your music is stored on iTunes, you can use iTunes to find and delete the duplicate files instead of installing another program.

AllDup

AllDup includes an impressive set of features for a free duplicate file finder. It seems to have options only seen in the premium versions of similar tools.

Some of the better features include being able to search through multiple folders or hard drives at once and compare files from all sources or just within the same folder. This level of precision already sets this one apart from most other duplicate file finders.

On top of that, AllDup can compare files byte by byte as well as by file attributes and all the other normal criteria (name, extension, size, etc.). What's more is the ability to scan inside RAR and ZIP files, explicitly include/exclude file types and folders and preview the music without exiting the software.

There's both a normal and portable version of this duplicate file finder.

Duplicate Cleaner Free

This free duplicate file scanner for Windows has the facility to deep scan various music formats such as MP3, M4A, M4P, WMA, FLAC, OGG, APE, and others.

Its interface is easy to use and has a truly impressive range of options to fine-tune your search. The selection assistant is particularly useful for quickly marking files for deletion based on your criteria.

Criteria can include matching audio tags like the artist, title, and album, as well as the genre, length, year, any comments, and others. Otherwise, you can have the search only look for duplicate audio data and ignore any tags.

You can also use search filters that take into account the file's creation and modified date, size, and file extension, plus search through Zipping archives.

Once Duplicate Cleaner gives a list of results, you can use the selection assistant to mark what you want to be deleted. Some of those options include keeping the file that's the longest, smallest, has the shortest name or even deleting every duplicate but one.

This program is just a trial of the professional edition. However, even though it isn't the full software, it still functions as an easy way to find and remove duplicate files so long as the group is limited to 100 files or less.

The similarity is a stellar freeware program for searching for duplicate music files. It uses advanced algorithms that compare audio files based on sound content rather than binary patterns.

Duplicate Music Files Finder

This duplicate file finder compares music files by searching for matching filenames, MP3 tags, CRC checksums, and file sizes.

In the settings is where you can decide which music files the program should scan for and if it should look through subfolders too.

Even though the program interface as a whole isn't super up-to-date, the results are displayed side by side so that you can clearly compare the size and name of the duplicate files, and select which ones should stay or go.

Duplicate Music Files Finder also comes with a built-in set of tools for managing your files. For example, it can rename badly formatted music files automatically by looking at the song's metadata and renaming the file accordingly. There's also a quick tag editor and you can even play duplicate files to check them before deletion.

If you haven't got Winamp installed then the program complains about it, but a quick reconfigure pointing to where your favorite media player is installed will fix that.
