This article describes the procedure for downloading and installing version 3.4.62.295 of the Bridgemate Pro server USB-serial converter for 64-bit versions of Windows 10. You can use this driver as a replacement for your current driver should you experience problems using the Bridgemate Pro server on computers running Windows 10.

Windows 10 introduces support for emulated devices. Now you can develop an emulated Universal Serial Bus (USB) host controller driver and a connected virtual USB device. Both components are combined into a single KMDF driver that communicates with the Microsoft-provided USB device emulation class extension (UdeCx). Easily connect serial devices through a USB port. Most modern computers and laptops don't have RS232 (DB9) ports, making the use of legacy peripherals and high-tech devices which connect with COM ports almost impossible.

Introduction

Version 3.4.62.295 of the Aten USB-serial converter driver has been successfully tested on 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows 10.

Note:

Only install this driver when you connect the Bridgemate Pro server to a USB port using the “Aten USB-serial converter” which is supplied with the Bridgemate Pro server. If the Bridgemate Pro server uses a direct serial connection port or another brand of USB-serial converter, do not use this driver.

IMPORTANT:

This driver only works with the new chipset type of Aten UC232A USB-serial converters supplied after 2012. These new converters can be recognised by the third character of the serial number, which is printed on the label on the back of the converter. This serial number starts with 'Z3' or 'Z8'. If the following character is a letter, the converter is the new type and can be used together with this driver. If the character is a digit, the converter is the old type and this converter cannot be used with 64-bit versions of Windows 10. This old type of converter can still be used with previous versions of Microsoft Windows, together with the 32/64-bit drivers for those versions.
Left: Old type, serial number = Z38..
Right: New type, serial number = Z3F..

Procedure

If a driver is already installed, you should uninstall the current driver first.

How to uninstall the current driver:

  1. Make sure the Aten USB to Serial converter is connected to one of the USB ports on your computer.
  2. Click on the Windows key and the X key on your keyboard simultaneously to open the Quick Links menu.
  3. Click on 'Device Manager'.
  4. Double-click on 'Ports (COM & LPT)'.
  5. Right-click on 'USB to serial bridge' (the name may be slightly different depending on the current driver version), then click 'Uninstall'.
  6. If the option 'Delete the driver software for this device' is displayed, select it, then click OK to confirm you want to uninstall the driver.
  7. The driver will now be un-installed.
  8. Remove the USB converter from the USB port.

How to install the 64-bit driver:

  1. Make sure the Aten USB to Serial converter is NOT connected to the computer.
  2. Download the file: UC232A_Windows_Setup_V1.0.081.exe
  3. Open the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. The driver will now be installed.
  4. After the installation has completed, connect the USB to Serial converter to a USB port on your computer. The converter will automatically be recognised and is ready to use. You can now connect your Bridgemate Pro server via the converter.

  • 'This Device cannot start (Code 10)'
  • 'No driver installed for this device'
  • 'Device driver was not successfully installed'

Available forum solutions to this problem are half-baked. Even vendors selling their 'USB to Serial' adapters are baffled.

Main cause of this issue is because the device you own contains a counterfeit 'Prolific' chip (China clone).

The counterfeit chip use the same Vendor ID (VID_067B) and Product ID (PID_2303) - as the authentic Prolific chips.

Introduction to web design pdf. To solve this intellectual infringement - original Prolific company modified their newest drivers to render the counterfeit adapters unusable. Unfortunately this decision also renders all earlier adapters inoperative.

The Prolific 64-bit drivers that Microsoft supplies via Windows Update, Versions 3.4.67.325, 3.4.25.218, 2.1.51.238 and 3.4.62.293 - will not work with most adapters and therefore shows the generic 'Code 10' error.

Or you may get no error at all, but your device will still not work.

If your adapter was working prior to going to Windows Update, you can 'roll back' to the previous installed driver and all will be well once again.

However if you didn't have a previous driver installed that worked - you'll have to go through the process of removing any PL-2303 driver installation programs, the actual driver files, and the information (.INF) file, BEFORE you are able to successfully install the correct driver.

(What worsens this issue is that there are many 'Prolific Driver Removal Tools' that do not work properly.)

And Windows 8, 8.1 and Window 10 are set by default to automatically update your drivers without your permission or even notifying you of the update.

So no matter how many times you remove the driver files and reboot - the next time you insert the USB-To-Serial adapter, Windows installs the newest non-working version again.

Only 64-bit driver I have ever found that works with all the 'Prolific' adapters is Version 3.3.2.102.
