Linksys router firmware update is the solution for many network connection issues. Firmware is nothing but the software of your Linksys router. How to check current firmware version ?

Open the Internet browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1. Open the setup page and click on Status tab. On the status page and here you will find the current firmware version. Go to Linksys website and check for the firmware update for your model. If the new firmware is available on website then download it and upgrade it.

Linksys router firmware update process :

Step 1: Download Linksys Firmware file

Download the latest firmware file from the website and save it on your main computer. Click here to download the file. Enter the proper model number in search support box. The model number along with version number is on the flip side of your router. Double check the model number and hardware version number. Do not download incorrect file.

Step 2: Connect computer

Connect the main computer to the Ethernet port with the Ethernet cable. Do not upgrade firmware using a wireless computer. Always connect the computer with the Ethernet cable. Make sure that Local area connection on your computer is enabled.

Step 3: Open the setup page

Open Internet browser and in the address bar type 192.168.1.1. Open the setup page. Setup page is the page where you can change the settings manually.

Go to Administration tab. Click on Firmware upgrade sub tab as shown in the above figure.

If you do not see the setup page of your Linksys router as shown in the above image then you may have new router and you will see the setup as shown in the image below.

Step 4: Browse the firmware update file

Now click on Browse or Select button and browse the firmware file that you have already downloaded on your main computer.

Step 5: update firmware

Click on Upgrade firmware.

Step 6: wait for firmware update process

Upgrade process will take approximately 1 to 3 minutes. At the end you will get the message ” upgrade successful”. If you get the message ” upgrade failed” then reset the router again and try to upgrade the firmware. Make sure that you have downloaded the correct file.

Step 7: Reset the router

Try to go online and see if everything is working properly. If everything is working great then you do not need to reset the router. You can skip this reset step and finish the process.

After resetting the router, you will need to reconfigure the router from the scratch.

If you own a Linksys Wireless router, it is strongly recommended that you upgrade the firmware to a latest version, which may resolve lot of bugs including random dropping of wireless connections. This article explains how to upgrade to the latest firmware on your Linksys wireless router.

1. Get your Wireless Router Model Number and Version Number

On the back of your wireless router, you’ll see both model number and version number for your specific linksys wireless router. The example below shows the model and version of a WRT54G wireless router.

2. Download Latest Linksys Wireless Router Firmware

Go to linksys.com -> Support -> Enter your wireless router model number (for example, WRT54GS) -> Click on ‘Get Downloads’ -> Select Version number for your wireless router -> Click on the download link under firmware section, which typically shows the following information.

  • Release Date: For example, 07/01/2008
  • Firmware Version Number: For example, Ver.1.52.6
  • Download Size and Link. for example, 1.66 MB
  • Release Notes for the new firmware

3. Take a Backup of Linksys Wireless Configuration

Before the upgrade, take a backup of the current Linksys Wireless Configuration. From the web interface, go to Administration -> Config Management -> Backup -> Config.bin, Save this file to some location on your local machine.

4. Upgrade the Linksys Wireless Firmware

From the web interface, go to Administration -> Firmware Upgrade -> Choose the latest file that you downloaded above -> Click on Upgrade.

Once the upgrade started, do not click on any other link on the web interface. Just wait until the upgrade is completed.

Once you’ve completed the upgrade, verify your new firmware version to make sure the upgrade was successfully completed. In my case, following is the firmware version.

  • Before the upgrade old Firmware Version: v1.50.5
  • AFter upgrade Firmware Version: v1.52.5
